Today we have one of the most unique artists we’ve seen featured here on the front page. Illustrator mame_708 mainly focuses on Street Fighter 5 fan art, but brings a totally fresh flavor to the game’s characters that just seems to work despite it deviating far from the source.
In this batch of art pieces, we see a lot of Sakura, Zangief, Abigail, and Birdie, and each is getting into their own crazy adventures. A lot of what mame_708 does is creates comic book pages that tell stories involving our favorite fighters, and it’s all done in a cute style.
I can’t quite pinpoint what mame_708’s art style was inspired by, but the characters themselves remind me of something like the Garbage Pail Kids minus the disgusting aspect. I also get a bit of Pikmin — specifically Olimar and the bunch — though I don’t think these were the actual inspirations for the artist.
Regardless, this artwork is fantastic. Abigail dreaming of the endless possibilities for him and his tire, Godzilla Birdie wreaking havoc on a poor city filled with donuts, there’s just so much personality and life to these pieces.
Mame_708 notes on Twitter that their illustrations are finished and colored using colored pencils, and the medium fits well with the children’s book motif the artwork seems to portray.
There are some really great collections of pieces over on the artist’s Twitter that tell short stories such as Ryu finding a cat version of Abigail who refuses to get off of the Street Fighter poster boy’s bag. Be sure to check out our featured gallery below, then head over to their Twitter page for even more.
